Coffee Cnd Irish Cream Iced Shakerino

The name "Shakerino" for this beverage seems to have stemmed from a playful mix-up of Italian terminology and the drink's concept. It's almost a whimsical, dyslexic twist on the traditional Italian "Shakerato," which involves shaking espresso and sugar syrup with ice to create a frothy concoction. In a way, "Shakerino" embodies a sort of dystopian reinterpretation, or perhaps even a nod to authenticity with a made-up term like "authenticarian."

As I sifted through old files on my computer, I stumbled upon a recipe I developed ages ago. It was so ancient that my word processor struggled to open it! Yet, I couldn't resist shaking up a batch of the concoction, and with that first sip, it all came flooding back. Surprisingly, I had forgotten just how delightful it was!

While there are countless recipes online for homemade Irish cream liqueur, I simply don't have the time to make everything from scratch. Luckily, my friend Deb has a fantastic recipe, and I've heard whispers about Buffalo Trace's bourbon-cream liqueur, though I've yet to indulge. (If I sampled every liquor on my wishlist, I'd be too tipsy to share recipes!) While you could experiment with substitutes like coffee liqueur or a blend of amaretto and whiskey, there's something about the Irish cream liqueur that hits all the right spots for me.

I'm glad I splurged on a bottle because I've already whipped up several batches this week, and I plan to make a few more before summer bids us adieu.

Curious about other ways to put that Irish cream liqueur to use? I concocted a recipe for chocolate-banana "no churn" ice cream back when everyone was jumping on the no-churn bandwagon. (It's amusing how trends favoring less effort, like no-churn ice creams and no-knead breads, have surged while DIY enthusiasts tackle projects with gusto.) But hey, such is life. This Shakerino is a breeze to whip up and goes down oh-so-smoothly.

For a delightful twist, consider experimenting with different ice cream flavors in this recipe, though vanilla is the classic choice. Whether you brew your espresso using a moka pot, an espresso machine, or opt for instant espresso powder, ensure it's cooled slightly before use. If you're without these options, instant coffee can suffice, just amp up the amount for a stronger flavor.

This recipe can easily accommodate larger batches for gatherings. Simply double or even triple the ingredients and blend them until well-chilled and the ice is partially crushed, mimicking the texture achieved by shaking.

Here's what you'll need for one serving:

Ingredients:

  • - 2 ounces of Irish cream liqueur
  • - 1 scoop of vanilla ice cream
  • - 1 1/2 ounces of slightly cooled liquid espresso
  • - Optional: cocoa powder for garnish

Instructions:

1. Combine the Irish cream liqueur, vanilla ice cream, and espresso in a cocktail shaker.
2. Fill the shaker halfway with ice, then cover and shake vigorously for about 20 to 30 seconds until the mixture is thoroughly chilled.
3. Strain the mixture into a cocktail glass.
4. For an extra touch of indulgence, dust the drink with a sprinkle of cocoa powder before serving.
