I once found myself in a friendly Scrabble disagreement over the word "ade." Despite playing Scrabble in both English and French, I've realized that facing off against French players can be quite challenging due to their vast selection of verb conjugations. However, I'm not one to let competition get the best of me, except for that one time when I insisted that "ade" was a legitimate word while playing with some fellow English speakers. Luckily, a nearby dictionary in the summer house we were staying at confirmed that "ade" is indeed a fruit-based drink.

Non-native French speakers might find French verb conjugations challenging, but I don't dwell on it much because even native French speakers struggle with them. However, French speakers rightfully have difficulties with the multitude of homonyms in English—there/their/they're, it's/its, right/write, and so on.

But you won't need any assistance to whip up this ade, which I love to enjoy for a refreshing treat. This enhanced version packs a punch with the addition of fresh ginger, making it the ultimate double word score of lemonade.

As the temperatures rise, I served glasses of it over crunchy ice. The combination of fresh ginger and lemon creates a delightful blend of spiciness, tanginess, and refreshing goodness. (If that's grammatically accurate.)

WOULD YOU LIKE A Fresh Ginger Lemonade :

Love a strong ginger kick in your drink? Go for the higher end of the ginger range listed. But hey, feel free to experiment! If you're into less sweetness, you can dial down the sugar to 1/3 cup. And if you prefer liquid sweeteners like maple syrup or honey, start with 1/3 cup, then adjust to taste.

Oh, and if you're using Meyer Lemons, remember they're naturally sweeter, so you might want to lean towards the lower sugar amount.

Makes about 4 servings in a quart (1L).

Ingredients:

  • - 2 to 3 ounces (55-85g) fresh ginger, sliced (no need to peel)
  • - Zest of two lemons, peeled off with a veggie peeler
  • - 3 cups (750ml) water
  • - 1/2 cup (100g) sugar
  • - 1 cup (250ml) freshly squeezed lemon juice

Instructions:

1. Thinly slice the ginger. In a small saucepan, bring water, sugar, ginger slices, and lemon zest strips to a boil.

2. Once boiling, remove from heat, cover, and let it steep for 30 minutes to an hour.

3. Strain out the ginger and lemon pieces from the syrup, then mix the ginger-infused syrup with the fresh lemon juice in a pitcher. Pop it in the fridge to chill thoroughly.

4. When ready to serve, pour over plenty of ice.

Enjoy your refreshing drink with a zing!
